June is National Pet Microchipping Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of microchipping pets. As pet owners, it's our responsibility to provide the best care possible, and microchipping is a key part of that commitment. Here’s why microchipping is essential and how it can make a difference in the lives of pets and their families.

The Importance of Microchipping

Microchipping is a simple, safe, painless, and effective way to permanently identify your pet. A tiny microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is implanted just beneath your pet's skin.

Unlike collars and tags, which can break or fall off, a microchip provides a permanent ID that stays with your pet for life. This permanent form of identification is especially crucial if your pet gets lost or stolen. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), microchipped pets are much more likely to be reunited with their owners than pets without microchips. In a recent study, 52.2% of microchipped dogs and 38.5% of microchipped cats were returned to their owners, compared to 2.2% of dogs and 1.8% of cats without microchips.

How Microchipping Works

The microchipping process is quick and causes minimal discomfort to your pet, similar to a routine vaccination. Once the chip is implanted, you’ll need to register your pet’s microchip number with a national database, along with your contact information. It's important to keep this information up to date, especially if you move or change your phone number.

When a lost pet is found, animal shelters, veterinary offices, animal control officers, and most police stations can scan the pet for a microchip. The scanner reads the unique ID number, which is then used to access the owner’s contact information from the database. This process greatly increases the chances of a speedy and happy reunion.

The average cost to microchip a dog is $25–$60, which typically includes the chip, implantation, and online registration.

Taking Action This Month

During National Pet Microchipping Month, take the time to ensure your pet is microchipped and that their information is current. If your pet isn’t microchipped yet, it’s time to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Many animal shelters and rescue organizations also offer low-cost microchipping services during this awareness month.
