Summer Safety Tips
As summer heats up, it's important to ensure your pet stays safe and comfortable. Here are some essential tips to keep your furry friend cool and healthy during the hot months.
1. Hydration is Key
Always provide fresh, cool water for your dog. Dehydration can happen quickly in the summer, so keep water bowls filled. When you are on walks, visiting the dog park, or on the go, it is important keep a portable water bottle for your dog to stay hydrated regardless of location. Our recent blog explains how to properly hydrate.
2. Avoid the Heat of the Day
Plan your walks or visits to the dog parks for early mornings or late evenings when the temperatures are cooler. Midday heat can be dangerous for dogs, especially those with thick fur or health conditions.
3. Never Leave Pets in Cars
Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can soar to dangerous levels within minutes. Leaving your pet in a car can lead to heatstroke or suffocation and is life-threatening.
4. Shade and Cool Spaces
If your dog is outside for a period of time, make sure they have access to shady spots with opportunities to cool off. Whether that’s under an umbrella, a pergola, or even a kiddie pool can help keep your dog comfortable.
5. Vaccines & Prevention Methods
With your pet spending time outdoors this summer, it is crucial they are well protected against disease. Make sure your pet is up to date on all vaccines as well as heartworm, flea, and tick prevention. Fleas and ticks are most prominent in the summer months.
6. Protect Their Paws
Hot pavement can burn your dog's paws. Walk on grass or dirt paths whenever possible, and if you need to walk on pavement, check the temperature with your hand by holding it on the pavement for at least 10 seconds. If you are able to walk on the pavement barefoot, they can as well.
7. Use Sunscreen for Sensitive Areas
Just like humans, dogs can get sunburned. Apply pet-safe sunscreen to vulnerable areas like the nose, ears, and belly, especially for dogs with light-colored fur or thin coats.
8. Watch for Signs of Overheating
Panting, drooling, lethargy, and unsteady movements are signs of heatstroke. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, move them to a cool area immediately and contact your vet.
9. Groom Regularly
Regular grooming helps maintain a healthy coat, which can better insulate your dog against the heat. However, avoid shaving their fur too short, as it can expose their skin to sunburn and insect bites.
10. Plan Water Activities
Swimming is a great way for dogs to stay cool and get exercise. Whether it’s a trip to the lake, a splash in the pool, or playtime in a sprinkler, water activities can be a fun and safe way to beat the heat. Always remember to do your research before swimming in a body of water (such as lake, river, quarry, etc.) to prevent exposure to hazardous algae.
By following these tips, you can ensure your dog enjoys a happy, healthy, and cool summer. Remember, a little extra care goes a long way in keeping your canine companion safe during the hottest months of the year.
