The Ultimate Pet Parents Guide: How To Move With A Pet Safely

By Invisible Fence® Brand on 04-07-2025

It’s official — you’re moving! But before you start packing up your life, it’s important to think about how to move with your pet in mind. Whether it’s prepping for travel, setting up their new space, or ensuring they’re safe and stress-free during the move, we’ve got you covered. We asked Georgia Welch, Invisible Fence® Brand National Pet Training Manager, for the best pet expert tips for a smooth move.

Desensitize pets to moving boxes

Not knowing where your things are can be disorienting, and the same is true for your pet!

“Start off by packing in small ways that won’t impact your pet’s life too much.” Georgia said. “Make sure your pet can easily find their food, toys, and bed for the whole packing process so they know they are safe.”

Take things as slow as possible to decrease stress for you and your pet. Work one room at a time and choose one “landing zone” to store completely packed boxes. And don’t forget to keep walkways clear of clutter! It’s safer for your belongings and safer for your pet.

Visit your veterinarian

Believe it or not, right before a big move is the perfect time to schedule your vet visit. You can check up on your pet’s general health, discuss your pet’s anxiety concerns, and cross one more thing off your list.

“Preparing for your move as soon as you know is the best way to go.” Georgia said. “Preparation can be as basic as ensuring that your pup can ‘go potty’ on a leash and on command – not to mention being comfortable in a crate for transportation. Those are all great things to discuss with your vet!”

Pack for your pet’s move

Most on-the-move homeowners choose to pack a “go-bag” with clothing and toiletries for several days. Your pet needs one too! Pack several days worth of food (and treats!), medications, and other must-haves to keep as close to your pet’s routine as possible.

If you’re dealing with dog anxiety, discuss the possibility of short-use medications during your vet visit. It can make your move much easier.

Establish a “safe zone” in your new home

Pets thrive on consistency, which is why moving can impact their behaviors and temperament. As soon as you can, it’s a good idea to build a sanctuary in the new house where they can feel safe and welcome. Be sure to include their favorite bed, toys, or other items that make them feel at-home.

Training and boundary-setting

A new home means a new yard. Get your pet feeling comfortable in their new boundaries as soon as possible to ensure they are happy and safe at your new place.

“Setting up consistent rules from the start is critical to your pet’s safety.” Georgia said. “From feeding time to potty breaks, everything is different to your pet, so be patient!”

Invisible Fence® Brand offers training programs especially designed for new movers  to help your pet feel confident at home. We tailor our Perfect Start Plus training to your new fence, new yard, and new routine to help your pet adjust to their environment.

Bond with your pet

“Positive reinforcement helps your pet know that you’re proud of them and love them!” Georgia said. “So make sure to give plenty of treats and praise when your pet does a good job with your new system and Manners Obedience Training!”

Once you’re settled in, give your pet a whole day of doing all their favorite things to show them that they did a good job. And don’t forget — we’re here if you need help adjusting to your new yard. Schedule a free consultation to learn more about a customized pet plan.
