Tips to Prevent Lost Pets

By Invisible Fence® Brand on 07-10-2019

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month, and as the pioneer of the pet containment industry, Invisible Fence® Brand’s mission is to keep dogs and cats safe at home. Please read these tips to prevent lost pets and learn how you can help animals in your community.

Keep Your Pet from Running Out the Door

Have you ever had to hold your dog back to try to prevent them from running out the door? Dog trainers like to call this “Door Dashing.” One way to prevent lost pets is to remember to keep your doors and entry points closed to avoid accidental escapes, especially if you have a door dasher. Other exercises that help keep your dog from leaving the house are to practice training your dog to stay and wait.

Training your dog to not charge the door can be easier said than done though. But with the help of products like our Shields® Gate (think Invisible® baby gate), you can give your pet independence to explore indoors without escaping outside. It is a great way to keep your dog or cat from darting out the door, especially in multi-pet homes. Often people need a way to let the dog out but not the cat, or vice versa. The Shields Gate allows you to customize household rules for each pet.

Give Your Pet Access to the House

There are many reasons pets run away from home, but one of the most common is if they get startled and are trying to find shelter. So in addition to avoiding leaving your pet outside alone for extended periods of time, especially during thunderstorms or fireworks, another key to preventing lost pets is to give them a way to retreat to somewhere safe - like back inside your home.

The Doorman™ Electronic Pet Door lets you program rules for your dog or cat to come and go as they please. Plus, it is equipped with advanced safety technology that locks automatically, so only your pet has access to the house.

Prevent Pets from Leaving Your Yard

The best way to prevent pets from leaving your yard is to give your pet a safe place to play in your yard. For example, if your pet is a roamer or likes to chase squirrels or cars, give more freedom while setting boundaries with a wireless pet fence and proper training.
Our exclusive Boundary Plus® containment system lets your dog or cat play right up to the edge of your property, without leaving the yard. Unlike other wireless dog fences, our perceived endless boundary prevents “break-outs” and doesn't give your pet mixed signals if they try to re-enter.

Microchip your Dog or Cat

If a collar slips off or you forget to put it back on, a microchip will allow your pet to be returned home. According to The Humane Society, this simple procedure can be done by a local shelter or veterinarian. Be sure to register with the microchip company and keep them updated if your phone number or address changes. Lost pet recovery tools are equally as important as prevention.

Keeping pets home and safe with their owners is one of our top priorities. Since 1973, Invisible Fence® Brand’s innovative solutions, industry-leading training and expertise have given more than 3 million pets newfound independence and security - while also instilling confidence in their owners.
